Avilon Zoo: My First Philippine Zoo Visit!

This was quite an impromptu travel.

My night shift ended and I slept for a few hours in my office before going to Gateway. Ate lunch( or rather, brunch) at Pancake House.

After chilling for a while in the mall, I remembered I bought Metrodeal passes for discounted Avilon Zoo entrance fees at Php299 a person. I then hurried to Neotopia to print the voucher (Note: You always have to print the vouchers you get when you buy from Metrodeal, otherwise, you can't avail what you bought).

So off to Avilon Zoo!

You can take the Montalban-Eastwood UV Express vehicles from their terminal in Farmers or ride the Montalban-Cubao jeep (whose route in Cubao I am still not aware of apparently). Travel time is 1.5-2 hours from Cubao. (I went to my home first before heading straight to Avilon Zoo).

Now, how would you know if your stop is near? You can tell the driver beforehand to drop you off at Eastwood or that you are going to Avilon zoo. The one main landmark I can tell you is Total Gas Station. Where there will be nearby tricycles lined up.

Ride one of those tricyles. Just say "Avilon zoo" and they know it. It is a 5-10min ride, quite a bumpy one too(and dusty) since you'll be going through an uncemented road.

Once you are at the parking lot of Avilon zoo, you'll see Noah's Ark beside it which is filled with stores. Unfortunately, Noah's Ark was closed when I visited Avilon Zoo.

Anyway, off we go to the entrance booth! I presented my printed voucher to the guy at the booth and then stamped us and finally inside!

You'll arrive first by their eating station where are a lot of tables. You can take your snacks first or buy water for your walking(and lots of walking) in the zoo.

Avilon zoo has lot of sections. There were areas with cages but most  were just fenced just as this Ostrich's place.

If the ostrich comes near the fence/rails, I assure you, you would back away a few steps back if you know how this bird can easily chase you.

The ostrich's neighbor is a wallaby. A marsupial. And if you are interested in an animal looking like a mouse combined with a kangaroo, then check out the wallaby.

Continuing the walk, you'll arrive by our fierce felines. The way these felines are caged are kind of dangerous as it is within reach.

This shot was taken by placing my iPad close enough to the cage so that the metal grids are out of the shot.

They also have white tigers. Sorry for the blurred shots. They keep on moving around.

They also have a lion but was too far from the viewing place to take a picture of with just my iPad camera.

Avilon's newest addition to their family is a pair of giraffes named Luningning and Bahaghari (Luning and B'hari for short).
They have a viewing deck for these two. Luning is the one on the caged area. They separated her for the meantime because they said she is sick and currently under medication.

Avilon also has a reptilian zone where you get to see cobras, snakes, lizards, turtles, and - though not a reptile - some tarantulas and scorpions.

Arriving at the place where you hear a lot of flapping and squawking and chirping, you get to see a lot of colors..
Punk-inspired maybe?

White peacock!

Check out that head!

They also have birds of prey in their zoo. You will also come upon our well known four-footed hooved friends in their zoo.

There are sheeps, goats, rams, deers, horses, and more.

At a small section of the zoo, they have two species of bears where you can feed them at a distance for a fee.

You can also see different species of a primates in another section that are also seen in typical zoos.

And if you are lucky, you will chance upon a narrow entrance to short cave-like walkway where more animals are featured such as the Palawan leopard cat and an armadillo.

After walking around a bit more to see if we missed anything else, we saw the area where visitors are allowed to have their pictures taken with selected animals such as the white pony and samoyed(which I didn't see).

And, you can see this fellow roaming around if you are lucky!

And after 2 hours of walking, the Avilon zoo trip ended. Went back to their snacks station where we enjoyed the swings nearby to relax a bit before leaving and heading back home the same route taken going there.
And yes, that guy in the picture is with me during this short trip. :)
